Radio: Rep. Stephanie McClintock tells KXL’s Lars Larson she wants to ban sex offenders from coaching youth sports

Rep. Stephanie McClintock, R-Vancouver, says she’s considering legislation that would ban sex offenders from applying to and coaching youth sports in Washington state. This comes after a sex offender was allowed to coach a youth football team in Clark County.

Appearing on Portland’s KXL Radio, McClintock, a former soccer coach, told host Lars Larson that it was “pretty scary and disturbing” to discover that a registered sex offender could have access to children as their sports coach. She and her seatmate, Rep. John Ley, are researching the best ways to prevent this, including the possibility of introducing legislation during the 2026 legislative session, which begins in January.

“We cannot have our kids being coached one-on-one time and the grooming that goes on in these types of settings when we have someone there for ulterior motives,” McClintock told Lars Larson.
